Before anyone else noticed, he knew she couldn’t hear in her left ear. He never asked, never said it out loud, never made a show of being considerate.

He simply changed where he stood — and kept standing there.

Left ear, right ear
If there’s something you want someone to hear but don’t want anyone to know, you can say it into my left ear.
All her life she’d thought of that ear as her flaw. In this moment it became the one thing she had to give.

But it’s still there. And from here, every day gets a little brighter.
09 WAXING AGAIN
This time, it isn’t an act
Since we got back together, it isn’t an act anymore.
What lies between isn’t time. It’s a road he had to walk himself. She couldn’t walk it for him — no one could.
Light can reach him. But the one who walks out is still him.
10 FULL MOON
You deleted me without a second thought
At the start of the book, red-eyed, she deleted every way to reach him.
At the end, he lazily brings up that old score.
You deleted me without a second thought.
He remembered that one deletion for an entire book.
